Gearing up for the Accelerator Phase: Partner with us for success!

The Indigenous Homes Innovation Initiative supports innovative ideas

The Initiative funds projects led by Indigenous individuals, communities and organizations to design and build more effective, sustainable and culturally inspired living spaces by and for Indigenous peoples. An Indigenous Steering Committee, comprised of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Nation experts, leads the Initiative.

As the project selection process moves forward, the partnering opportunities for the Accelerator Phase become clearer.

If you, your organization or institution want to work with Indigenous innovators leading a project, strengthening economic resilience and community self-determination by sharing your gifts and skills while respecting Indigenous rights and values, we want to hear from you.

Experts are being sought in areas including:

  • Community engagement
    • engaging with community members to understand the end users’ needs
    • facilitating gender-based analysis Plus that considers the needs of all community members
  • Technical/engineering/architecture
    • construction techniques and materials that respect climate conditions and geographic realities
    • designs and technologies that address unique community needs in innovative ways
  • Energy efficiency
    • solar energy, biomass options, wind power
    • reducing reliance on diesel fuel
    • improving house envelope to retain heat/cold, minimize mould growth
    • ways to curb heating/maintenance/operational costs
  • Training and capacity development
    • facilitating culturally-relevant learning approaches at the community level
    • developing effective apprenticeship/training programs that work
  • Project financing/planning
    • navigating federal/provincial/territorial and municipal funding opportunities
    • proposal writing
    • budgeting basics
    • leveraging philanthropic opportunities to secure funding
    • sourcing loans through lending institutions
  • Legal services
  • Community planning
  • Other expertise or services relevant to the Initiative

The Accelerator Phase will launch in Winter 2020. Selected projects will spend up to 18 months in the Accelerator to enable the idea to move to implementation.

How to apply

By November 1, 2019, please submit an Expression of Interest of up to five pages that describes:

  • How you or your organization can assist Indigenous innovators
  • What in-kind support you can provide to Indigenous innovators
  • Which services must be paid for and how much they cost
  • What experience you have or your organization has with innovative Indigenous housing projects
  • What experience you have or your organization has working with Indigenous partners
  • A simple pitch that we will pass on to Indigenous innovators indicating why they should partner with you

The next steps in the process are as follows:

  1. The Initiative’s Indigenous Steering Committee will review, evaluate and select up to 24 project innovators to participate in the Indigenous Homes Innovation Initiative Accelerator Phase.
  2. The project team will review expressions of interest from potential project partners to see where partners could align with identified project needs.
  3. Following an announcement of the selected Innovators, Project Mentors and Innovators will work collaboratively to contact potential project partners that align with project needs.
  4. Discussions with proposed project partners are anticipated in Winter 2020 to formalize the relationship, with agreements detailing supports to be provided including in-kind services.

Who can apply?

  • Individuals of First Nation, Inuit or Métis Nation heritage
  • Representatives of First Nation, Inuit or Métis Nation government
  • Indigenous representatives of a First Nation-, Inuit- or Métis Nation- owned and operated private or not-for-profit entity

Key Dates

  • Launch and call for ideas open: April 11, 2019
  • Application Deadline: August 1, 2019
  • First-stage screening: up to 24 applicants selected for Accelerator
  • Accelerator Period: Beginning fall 2019
  • Second-stage screening:15 to 24 projects selected for implementation: Beginning spring 2020
  • Project Implementation Period: 2020-2023
  • Lessons Learned and Knowledge Sharing: 2022-2023


  • Accelerator Period: Up to 24 applicants will receive up to $350,000 worth of funding and support services (a period of up to 18 months).
  • Project Implementation Period: 15 to 24 projects that successfully complete the Accelerator Period will receive up to $2 million per project for construction.
