Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC)’s Skills and Employment Branch works to ensure all Canadians are able to access the skills and supports they need to fully participate in the labour market and contribute to growth and innovation. A range of structural, technological, economic and demographic factors are changing the Canadian labour market and affecting the nature of work. New jobs will require increasingly higher levels of skills but approximately half of Canadian workers do not have the essential skills they need to learn more advanced ones or adapt to the changing realities of the labour market. An Impact Canada Fellow is working with the Office of Literacy and Essential Skills to design and launch a challenge prize to incent innovators to develop solutions addressing the essential skills gap affecting lower-skilled Canadian workers.
